Why Nutella Banana Bread is the Perfect Treat

Nutella banana bread has truly become one of my favorite treats as of late. It’s the pairing you never knew you needed, elevating the classic banana bread recipe. The unique blend of sweet bananas and chocolatey hazelnut flavors balances out perfectly. I’ve made this 3 weeks in a row because family and friends keep on requesting this one! Nutella banana bread serves as a good dessert, snack, or quick breakfast option when in a hurry. This in addition to my Apple Crumble Pie recipe are my top two Thanksgiving sweet treats.

Ingredients You’ll Need for Nutella Banana Bread

The two most important ingredients for Nutella banana bread are of course Nutella and bananas. The amount of Nutella used can vary depending on your preferred flavor. I personally LOVE Nutella, so this recipe includes an extra scoop or two of Nutella into the batter itself before doing the swirl to have a more balanced taste.

Please also note that adding Nutella into the batter makes the bread come out a bit darker after baking. For a more visually appealing Nutella banana bread where you can see the Nutella swirls more distinctly, you should not add Nutella to the batter itself, only add it at the end when doing the Nutella swirl in the loaf pan.

Due to my preference for a more balanced Nutella banana taste, I only use about 2 and a half ripe bananas for this recipe. If you love banana bread, then definitely use the full 3 bananas. It’s important to use ripe bananas because trying to mash hard, unripe bananas will not be a fun experience for you. When it comes to mashing, I just use a fork and a small bowl and get busy!

The pantry staples for this recipe are butter, eggs, flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and vanilla. If you’re like me and you love cinnamon, feel free to let your hand a little loose when adding. I always fill it a little over the top when adding the ½ tsp cinnamon for this recipe.

The Surprise Ingredient

The one ingredient that may surprise you in this Nutella banana bread is likely the sour cream. The sour cream can be replaced with greek or plain yogurt if that’s what you have on hand. This ingredient isn’t absolutely necessary, but I highly recommend using it. Adding in the sour cream does NOT negatively affect the taste in any way. It adds moisture and makes the Nutella banana bread more soft and tender.

Overall

Nutella banana bread is the ultimate comfort food—simple to make, unbelievably delicious, and perfect for any occasion. Whether you enjoy it fresh out of the oven or as a snack with coffee, this recipe is sure to impress. If you’ve never tried baking with Nutella, give it a try today! Let the irresistible combination of bananas and Nutella win your heart. Happy baking!

  • ½ cup brown sugar 100 grams
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar 50 grams
  • 2.5 – 3 ripe bananas use 2 if you prefer less banana flavor
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • cup sour cream or yogurt (plain or greek)
  • 2 tbsp Nutella

  • 2 cups all purpose flour 240 grams
  • 1 tsp baking soda

Instructions

  • Line the loaf pan with parchment paper. This recipe can fill one large bread loaf pan or 2 small bread loaf pans.
  • Preheat oven to 350℉
  • Mix the melted butter and sugars together in a large bowl.
  • Mash the bananas in a separate small bowl then add to butter & sugar mixture.
  • Add eggs, vanilla, and sour cream and whisk together.

  • Add half of the dry ingredients into the wet ingredient mixture and mix.
  • Add the rest of the dry ingredients and mix.
  • Warm the 1/2 cup of Nutella in the microwave slightly for about 15 seconds.
  • Add half of the banana bread mixture into the bread loaf pan. Then add about half of the Nutella on top and swirl it with a butterknife.

  • Then add the rest of the banana bread mixture on top, then the rest of the Nutella and swirl again.
  • Place the pan in the oven for about 50 to 55 minutes. Check the bread around 30 minutes in and place a toothpick, knife or fork in the middle to see if it still needs a lot more time left.
  • Once done baking, you can add powdered sugar through a sifter for presentation or just let cool and eat as is!

Notes

Sour Cream – This is used for texture purposes. It allows the bread to come out super soft. You absolutely cannot taste any sour cream flavor in the final product.
